How much clearance is recommended behind a wall-mounted LCD or Plasma screen TV?

I’ve seen wall mount brackets with 1.25in and 2.5in clearance. Although the 1.25 in will look better, I’m concerned it won’t allow enough circulation for my flat panel which has a fan exhaust port on the back of the unit.
